WABUSH, N.L. — Wabush residents are being called to the polls on Monday, June 18. There was a vacancy when councillor Colin Vardy resigned recently.
Voting is from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Mike Adam Recreation Centre.
Two candidates have come forward, Terry Curran and Don Best.
The Aurora asked both to explain why they decided to run for council, and what their priorities are.

Why am I running:
I would like to see the town of Wabush prosper and grow and to bring forward new ideas to facilitate this change.
My priorities:
1. Roads i.e.: repair & maintenance.
2. Listening to the residents of Wabush with their concerns and how to effectively resolve these concerns.
3. I would like to be a voice of getting fairness for the people of Wabush if or when amalgamation comes to the table again, but in the end it's the residents that will decide this.
Why should people vote for me:
I've lived here 40 years + seen the highs and lows in the town of Wabush. I would like to facilitate change for the better of Wabush with the support of the residents of Wabush. I plan to retire here so I plan to make this a place where other people would like to reside and stay.

My name is Terry Curran and I am asking for your support in the upcoming Wabush byelection on June 18.
I have 12 years of experience on the Wabush Town Council including four years as your deputy mayor.
The past few years have been challenging times for our community, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. My past experience as councillor, deputy mayor and chairman of the finance committee are tools that I will use to work with you, the residents of Wabush, our council, and our provincial and federal governments to allow Wabush to rebuild a strong economic foundation.
I feel that the priorities for the town that I will act on your behalf are:
Secure revenue streams to offset the revenues lost from the closure of Wabush Mines (ex. Tacora, Alderon)
Work with the provincial government to secure a 3rd transmission line. (This will allow us to attract more businesses to the area.)
Work with the Town of Labrador City to find a cost effective solution to recreation in our area.
Upgrades to local infrastructure (sewage treatment plant, roads, buildings, Jean-Lake walking trail, etc.)
The next few years are critical to our community and I believe that my steady hand and strong voice will have a positive influence in how our future is shaped.
