Bedford man, 20, charged in alleged sexual assaults at Dalhousie University

Residents with homes on or near the Dalhousie University campus say some returning students have a cavalier disregard to following COVID-19 restrictions and feel menaced by the hearty partying that occurs in their neighbourhood when school begins again each fall.

A young man from Bedford has been charged with committing three sexual assaults at Dalhousie University in Halifax in 2019.

Halifax Regional Police say the incidents happened in student housing at Dal in September and October 2019 and were reported to police in February and March 2020.

Two of the incidents involved the same woman and the third involved another woman, police said Thursday.

Michael James Allain, 20, will be arraigned in Halifax provincial court next month on three counts of sexual assault.

Allain signed two undertakings to police Dec. 29 agreeing to have no contact with the women.

On Thursday, police said Allain was acquainted with both complainants.

“We are not releasing any further details out of respect and concern for the victims’ privacy and well-being,” police said.

“We encourage anyone who is the victim of sexual assault to contact police. We want victims to know they will not be judged, and will be treated with compassion, dignity and respect throughout the entire investigative process.”
