Black smoke seen for kilometres after hot tar sparks Halifax construction site fire

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a construction site that sent heavy black smoke billowing high over Halifax mid-morning Wednesday.

Deputy Chief David Meldrum said firefighters were called to the scene at the corner of Columbus Street and Massachusetts Avenue at about 9 a.m.

"On arrival, they encountered heavy fire outside the building," Meldrum said, adding a crane outside the building was also on fire.

According to a worker at the site, crews were hoisting a pallet of hot roofing tar but some fell off and caught the crane on fire.

Crews were able to keep the flames outside the building, which is to be a self-storage building, and got things under control just before 9:30 a.m.

There were no injuries.

Halifax Regional Police had blocked off portions of Kempt Road, Columbus Street and Massachusetts Avenue while fire crews battled the blaze, but have since reopened the streets to traffic.

Halifax Water had also been called to the scene.

Fire investigators are expected to remain on scene after crews cleaned up.
