ALBERTON, P.E.I. — Alberton town council recently moved to allocate $1,000 towards winter carnival activities scheduled for Feb. 13 to 15. The money will go toward activities including horse and sleigh rides and music and lights for a free skate.

“We are trying to start 2021 off on the right foot and provide the Town of Alberton with an exciting and fun experience,” noted Kenan Wilkie, recreation and events coordinator for the town, in his written report.

Also included in the report, the outdoor rink behind the fire department is popular when conditions permit.

A walking group at Alberton Elementary is popular with seniors and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m.

Pickleball is a growing sport in Alberton. Each Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Alberton Elementary people of all ages gather to participate in the fun racket sport.

RCMP report for January

A spike in complaints about break and enters, thefts and fraud in the Alberton area are under investigation by RCMP.

The RCMP has asked the community not to accept stolen personal cheques after several were cashed at local businesses.

In January, West Prince RCMP responded to 16 calls for service and spent 223 hours at work in the town.

Calls for service included harassing communication, criminal harassment, flight from police, fraud, break and enter, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assistance to the general public, suspicious persons, littering, two off-highway vehicle violations, two well-being checks and three 911 Act calls.

Five check stops and radar checks were conducted in January. Officers issued two charges and several verbal warnings.

Police continue to respond to ATV complaints in the community, but drivers continue to flee when officers try to pull them over. RCMP say any information about the runaway riders is welcome.

Appetite for development

A new subdivision is taking shape in Alberton.

The new development on Emma Drive is a municipally-owned subdivision.

All 30 lots are sold, council heard at the February meeting. There will be 19 duplexes built.

“That’ll be an asset to the Town of Alberton,” said Mayor David Gordon. “Basically, in one year we sold all them lots. There’s a demand out there for lots coming up for development for sure.”

Blockage means spring sewer work

A blockage in the sewer line on Albion Street in Alberton will mean replacing 400 feet of sewer line in the coming spring.

Alberton chief administrative officer Donna Thomson is gathering quotes for the work.

Budget meetings begin

Alberton will hold a budget meeting on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

Storm date Feb. 25.
