SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A regular shoplifter was caught on camera stealing a door lock from a Summerside business.

Wayne Joseph Gallant, 31, pleaded guilty recently in Summerside provincial court to possessing stolen property. 

In December, Gallant unwrapped an electronic Weiser doorknob in aisle 7A at Kent Building Supplies in Summerside. He hid the item in his hoodie and left without attempting to pay.

This charge is part of a longer list of thefts from the same store and he is serving a sentence for those charges at the provincial correctional facility.

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Gallant to 45 days in custody, concurrent to the time he’s already serving. After his release, he’ll spend 12 months on probation. He must also pay $233.99 in restitution.


Impaired driving sends Alberton man to jail

A 21-year-old Alberton man will spend three days in jail for impaired driving. 

Richard Dean Millar pleaded guilty recently in Summerside provincial court to being impaired within two hours of operating a vehicle.

RCMP pulled Millar over in Northport on Dec. 29, at 11:30 p.m. While stopped, police noticed Millar appeared impaired and he subsequently failed a roadside test. 

Back at the detachment, Millar provided two breath samples of 90 and 100 mg/ 100ml blood.

When asked, Millar apologized to the court.

“It’s a mistake that should’ve never happened and it won’t happen again.”

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Millar to three days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Millar must also pay $300 in victim surcharges and will be prohibited from driving for 12 months.


Probation for West Point woman after mischief causing damage 

A 19-year-old West Point woman was ordered to pay restitution after she damaged a motel room in North Bedeque last year.

Naomi Don Betts pleaded guilty in Summerside court recently to mischief causing damage.

The incident occurred in May at the Canada’s Best Value Inn in Central Bedeque; Betts caused $1,000 worth of damage.

Since the incident, Betts has made significant efforts to get help and is in touch regularly with an outreach worker.

Judge Krista MacKay suspended sentencing Betts in favour of 12 months on probation during which time she is to receive counselling as recommended by a probation officer. She’ll also have to pay $1,000 in restitution and another $100 in victim surcharges.


Failure to appear in court means jail time for Prince County man

A 42-year-old Lennox Island man who missed two court dates is now in jail.

Terrence James Bernard pleaded guilty recently in Summerside provincial court to failing to appear in court twice.

Each time he didn’t show up, a warrant was issued. Each time he was issued a new court date and released on an undertaking with the condition he make a future court date. 

After the second such warrant being issued, police picked up Bernard on Feb. 8 and held him on remand. 

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Bernard to 10 days in custody for each charge. Bernard was given credit for time served and has eight days left on his sentence.


Charlottetown man pleads guilty to impaired driving in Summerside

A Charlottetown man found driving while impaired in Summerside was in court recently. 

Shawn Michael Smith, 50, pleaded guilty to being impaired within two hours of operating a vehicle.

The incident occurred Oct. 16, in Summerside.

Smith was fined $2,000 and sentenced to five days in jail. He must also pay $600 in victim surcharges and will be prohibited from driving for 12 months.


Summerside man shirks probation, gets probation

A Summerside man who didn’t fulfil the conditions of his probation appeared in Summerside court recently. 

Charles Irvin Shaw, 45, pleaded guilty to failing to report to his probation officer between Aug. 29 and Nov. 3. The probation order was from April 2020 and followed 60 days in custody on several charges of breaching an undertaking and being unlawfully in a dwelling. 

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Shaw to another 12 months of probation.


Kensington man to spend 60 days in jail for impaired driving

A Kensington man will spend two months in jail for impaired driving. 

Jason Edward Pineau, 44, pleaded guilty recently in Summerside provincial court to being impaired within two hours of operating a vehicle.

The charge is from June in Summerside. Pineau initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea in December.

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Pineau to six months in custody, a five-year driving prohibition and three years of probation during which he is to attend any counselling his probation officer deems appropriate.

Pineau must also pay $100 in victim surcharges.
