SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The police had to tell Paul Buchanan three times before it made sense.

"Do you own a husky?" asked the officer.

"Yes," said Buchanan, unsure why the police were asking.

"Do you live on Myrtle Avenue?"

"Yes."

"Well, your dog's on the roof."

Buchanan rushed home to make sure Nala, the 18-month old husky was safe.

Then he called his wife, Cheryl Ramsay.

"Cheryl, did you leave any windows or doors open?"

"No, not that I can think of."

"You never left a window open?"

"Well, just a crack."

Ramsay works nights, so before her shift, she had spent some time cleaning upstairs. She left a bedroom window open a crack because it was such a nice day.

Then she locked up the house and run some errands.  She was getting gas when her phone rang.

"I never laughed so hard in my life," said Ramsay. "You'd never believe it if you didn't take pictures, but I guess the proof was there, you could see her paw prints."

So this would only happen to us. I cleaned the house and left our bedroom window open just a hair because it is so...

Not one to enjoy alone time, Nala had wedged the window open wide enough to fit through.

She was perched in a snowbank on the roof when a neighbour, Arlene Grace walked by with her own dog.

Since Grace didn't normally see a dog on the family's roof, she called the police.

By the time Buchanan arrived home, the clever canine had headed inside on her own.

"She's quite the dog. We had to change our doorknobs because she could open the door," said Ramsay.

Nala hadn't even left a scratch on the window frame or the walls in her efforts to catch some sun on the roof.

"So she's a handful, but she's so friggin cute."
