CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A suspicious device that looked like a possible small pipe bomb was removed from a Charlottetown home Tuesday by an explosive removal unit from Halifax.
The device was seized by the removal unit in a secure container and was to be taken back to Halifax to be detonated and analyzed.
Bateson MacLeod was tearing down a barn on his property on Passmore Street when he came across the pipe that measured about six inches in length.
At first he thought the find was an artifact but on second look he felt the police should be called in.
“If it was any kind of explosive device I knew I couldn’t deal with it and I couldn’t just throw it away,’’ he says.
He called the Charlottetown police. After they saw the suspicious device, the explosive removal unit in Halifax was called.
To be safe, police cordoned off the area and evacuated residents neighbouring the property.
“It could be quite innocent,’’ said Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell.
MacLeod moved in to his property one year ago and has been doing renovations.
