SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton Regional Municipality council acknowledged the recent passing of two former municipal councillors prior to getting down to business at its latest meeting.
Both Ann Tompkins, 66, and Doug Young, 67, passed away on Nov. 21.
Tompkins, who spent most of her years working with her physician father (Dr. J.B. Tompkins) at the Dominion Clinic, served as a councillor in the former town of Dominion from 1985 to 1995.
“She was a wonderful person and always full of life. She was very civic-minded and passionate about everything she did in her community,” said Tompkins' longtime friend, former colleague and CBRM councillor Darren Bruckschwaiger.
Young, who was the longtime owner and operator of Lakeside Builders Ltd., spent nine years as a councillor with the former County of Cape Breton before serving on the first CBRM council following the 1995 amalgamation.
“He was a dear friend of this municipality — he was a hard-working councillor who also carried out that dedication in his business life,” said Coun. Steve Gillespie, on behalf of Deputy Mayor Ivan Doncaster.
