Face masks will be required equipment for French Catholic school board students in Ottawa when they step onto a school bus.

In a letter issued to parents Thursday, the director of education for the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est said face masks will be mandatory on school buses all for students, from kindergarten to Grade 12.

Réjean Sirois said the policy is designed to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission between students and bus drivers, who are exposed to dozens of passengers. The idea, he said, came from bus drivers, who asked their transportation companies to pursue a mandatory face mask rule.
