Dr. George Carruthers, a popular family physician, is proving difficult to replace.

When Carruthers retired from his Charlottetown practice in October, a locum was brought in to serve the patients. That locum is now leaving the province.

Health P.E.I. is left scrambling to find a replacement for a practice that had roughly 3,600 patients under Carruthers, who continues to work at the methadone clinic, which is separate from his family practice.

Health P.E.I. is looking to continue to provide service to patients of Carruthers’ former practice through locums and a nurse practitioner until a full-time permanent replacement physician is hired.

Carruthers was clearly a popular family physician as evidenced by the doctor receiving the 2016 Patients’ Choice Award.

“I do what I do because I love it and I want what is best for my patients,” Carruthers told The Guardian at the time. “When they take the time to tell me that I am making a difference in their lives by nominating me, that is very special.”
