A music video shoot behind a Malton housing complex appears to have been the target of a deadly shooting Saturday evening that left one person dead and six others injured.
Just before 6:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to 7230 Darcel Ave. near Morning Star and Goreway Dr. for reports of shots fired.
Seven people were found shot by Peel paramedics — one was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second was transported to hospital in critical condition.
Speaking to media at the scene, Const. Iryna Yashnyk said police believe the shooting occurred outside the building.
“However, we are clearing the building to make sure there are no further victims or suspect in the building,” she said.
Yashnyk declined to provide the victims’ ages or gender, but witnesses tell the Sun some of those shot were under the age of 18.
Up to 20 police officers, including heavily armed members of the Peel tactical unit attended the scene, who assisted in clearing the low-rise apartment complex.
Witnesses told the Sun the victims were part of a music video shoot in a parking lot behind the building when the gunmen pulled up and opened fire into the crowd.
The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving behind a frantic scene of injured people and a car full of bullet holes.
One witness who declined to give their name described ‘non-stop shooting,’ adding they initially thought the gunshots were firecrackers.
Resident Ade Thompson expressed shock and disgust over the shooting.
“This is too close to home,” the mother of two said.
“This could’ve hit my kids — It’s just not right. I’m disgusted right now.”
Police have no information on suspects, who remain at large.
Thompson, like her neighbours, were evacuated from their home shortly after police arrived and have no word on when they’ll be allowed to return.
“We are stranded out of our building and worried for the safety of our families,” she said.
“I think I wanna move out of here right now.”
