Police may never determine if suspicious device found on Charlottetown property was an explosive

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown resident who stumbled across a suspicious device that looked like a small pipe bomb may never know if what he found was an explosive.

Baterson MacLeod called Charlottetown police Tuesday when he discovered a pipe measuring about six inches in length in a barn he was tearing down on property he purchased on Passmore Street about one year ago.

Charlottetown police in turn called in an explosive removal unit from Halifax. Police also cordoned off the area and evacuated residents neighbouring the property.

Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell described the item as “a pipe with two caps which is indicative of a pipe bomb".

Residents looked on as the disposal unit removed the device in a secure container and transported it back to Halifax.

MacConnell says the disposal unit has yet to do anything with the pipe but adds they may simply dispose of the item and not bother with any thorough analysis.

“We don’t know if it is an explosive yet and we may never know," he says.

“There’s no criminal investigation associated to it."

MacConnell adds the previous owners of the property where the pipe was found are deceased.
