STRATFORD, P.E.I. — It turns out a number of Stratford residents were keen to take part in the town's new tree-planting initiative.
Last week, Stratford announced a residential tree-planting pilot program, which will provide up to 50 property owners with a coniferous or deciduous tree to have planted in their front yard. The goal of the program is to enhance the town's urban forest.

Wendy Watts, the town's community engagement manager, said all 50 applications were submitted and selected within the week.
"We never dreamed that it would go that fast," she said during a Stratford council meeting on Jan. 13.
There's currently a waitlist for residents who applied but didn't make the cut, and the program's co-ordinators are looking into securing more funding to potentially provide more trees, Watts said.
While town staff will deliver and plant the tree, residents are required to dig the hole. Successful applicants will be contacted by March and a $50 fee will be required.
