SYDNEY, N.S. — An informal poll of Cape Breton Post readers has found that people are overwhelmingly in favour of the addition of roundabouts on local roads.

The poll was created in light of news of the potential addition of three more roundabouts in the Sydney River area. As a result, we asked readers if they were "for" or "against" them.

As of noontime on Tuesday, more than 24 hours after the poll was created, some 742 votes were registered and 459 of them (61.86 per cent) were in favour of roundabouts.

There were 258 votes (34.77 per cent) cast against the roundabouts and 25 responses in an "other" category added to the poll.

The "other" category led to several opinions and options regarding roundabouts and how people should use them.

“I am for them, but not everyone knows how to use them, making it dangerous,” one respondent wrote.

“On busy streets it may be difficult for other drivers to enter the roundabout,” added another.

Several respondents disagreed with the notion of three new roundabouts added to Sydney River and noted building one at the Keltic Drive intersection near Superstore would not be necessary.

Those who took the time to comment on the poll on Facebook expressed overwhelming opinions in favour of roundabouts.

Most who added a note below the posted story on the social media site did have similar opinions on continued misuse of them, though.

“I’m for them. However, has anyone else noticed their use of profanity increases dramatically while using them?” wrote Kathleen McCabe Fowler.

Valerie Planetta noted her problem isn’t that the roundabouts are here, just that there are far too many of them.

“l mean three in Sydney River is ridiculous in my opinion.”

Natalie MacDonald told us she has no issue with roundabouts but some people need a refresher course on how to use them.

Details of plans for the construction of three roundabouts along Kings Road will be revealed at an open house hosted by Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal officials on Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Harbour Room in the Travel Lodge.

The public will be able to offer their feedback on the proposed changes for the busy traffic corridor at this time.
