MARYSTOWN, N.L. — With many parts of the province still cleaning up after a recent winter storm and the Avalon under a continued state of emergency, some retailers are starting to feel the impact.
Joe Avery, owner of Avery’s No Frills in Marystown, told SaltWire Network on Monday, Jan. 20 he is starting to see some bare spots on his shelves.
Avery explained the store has run out of fresh produce, and is also short on some grocery items.
“It's been since Thursday that we had something,” Avery said. The store's main warehouse is located in Mount Pearl.
He added it is still unclear when the store could see its next shipment.
“They don’t even know if we’re getting anything today or still waiting on an update.”
Just down the road at Walmart in Marystown, manager Max Noseworthy is also experiencing freight delays.
Milk man delayed
“Anything that is coming via St. John’s," he explained. "So for us, we receive our milk out of St. John’s — there’s a delay with that. There’s a delay with our general merchandise that comes via Oceanex, that boat typically would have arrived Friday, which it did not, so the last time there would have been a boat would have been last Tuesday.”
Noseworthy said it is unclear when shipments will resume.
Not all stores were left at the mercy of shipping delays.
Todd Badcock, manager of Sobeys in Marystown, said the store is currently well-stocked with grocery items.
“Not for us right now, I don’t know as of tomorrow we may,” he said. “I came in on Wednesday and was able to be proactive and cancel Friday night's order and bring it in on Thursday. He came down, was able to get back before the snowstorm.”
In Bay Roberts, at Powell’s Supermarket, Joe Mercer said stock is being maintained since the store's wholesaler is also located in Bay Roberts.
“The only stuff that we have been getting short on is Canada Bread (products) and stuff like that coming out of town,” he said, in reference to shipments that come from St. John’s.
“We have our own instore bakery, which keeps us going.”
