MARYSTOWN, N.L.

Parents and caregivers who may have questions about cannabis use and the new legislation around the recreational use of the drug will have an opportunity next week to get some answers during a community awareness session.

Eastern Health staff will be holding a discussion on non-medical cannabis and youth at St. Gabriel’s Hall in Marystown Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 7-9 p.m.

Tracey Sharpe-Smith, an addictions prevention consultant for Rural Avalon and Peninsulas with Eastern Health, told The Southern Gazette on Friday, Nov. 16 that during the session parents and caregivers will be given an opportunity to ask any questions they have regarding cannabis.

“We’ll be talking about cannabis itself, a little about legislation (and) what that means,” explained Sharpe-Smith. “The signs and symptoms of use — short-term effects, long-term effects.”

She noted they would also be talking about ways parents, caregivers and youth allies can have an open and honest conversation about cannabis.

“That’s really going to be the crux of the evening.”

The two-hour event will be broken down into a one-and-a-half-hour discussion on cannabis and related topics with the final 30 minutes reserved for a question and answer session.

Sharpe-Smith said that with legislation there had come a lot of questions so in response they are holding the information session in Marystown with others to follow in St. John’s, CBS, Harbour Grace, Bonavista, and Clarenville.
