Clarenville RCMP arrested a 31-year-old man from Deer Lake on Aug 10. after a high-speed chase on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The man was driving a pick-up that had been reported stolen in Corner Brook, and was clocked by RCMP as travelling at speeds in excess of 180 kilometres and passing other cars dangerously as it headed eastward from Corner Brook, according to an RCMP release.

Police had to pull back at times during the pursuit as a safety precaution.

The truck sped past a marked police car and struck a guardrail in the westbound lane between Deep Bight and Adeytown. The tires began shredding and the vehicle began to swerve back and forth across both lanes before eventually rolling twice and crashing into the westbound ditch.

The man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, possession of stolen property, unsafe storage of firearms and damage over $5,000. Two unsecured firearms were seized from the vehicle.

He is scheduled to appear in Clarenville Provincial Court on Oct. 4.
