BAY ROBERTS, N.L. — One of the final hurdles in getting Coley’s Point Primary replaced has finally been passed.

The provincial government announced Wednesday, Feb. 20, that it awarded a contract to JMJ Holdings Ltd. to replace the aging Bay Roberts school. The building is 67 years old and discussions on replacing the school have been ongoing for close to a decade.

The contract to replace Coley’s Point Primary is valued at $16.2 million. Accommodating Kindergarten to Grade 3, the single-storey, 4,100-square-metre building will feature 18 classrooms, a gymnasium, a music room and cafeteria, amongst other amenities.

Government expects construction will begin this spring, with a completion date earmarked for early 2021. It will be located on Eric Dawe Drive near Amalgamated Academy.

“I am very pleased that government has taken action and is delivering this new school,” Harbour Grace-Port de Grave MHA Pam Parsons said in the news release. “The people of Bay Roberts and surrounding communities have lobbied for more than a decade for a modern, clean and healthy facility for our young primary students, staff and entire school community. This is great news that the people deserve.”
