GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L.
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor’s proposed expansion of its wastewater treatment facility has received environmental approval.
The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment announced the project’s release from environmental assessment in an environmental assessment bulletin on Monday, Nov. 26.
As part of the its release, the town is required to develop a women’s employment plan for the construction phase of the expansion identifying specific commitments to support the recruitment, training, employment and retention of women.
The plan must receive approval by the deputy minister responsible for the Women’s Policy Office before work can start on the project.
As well, because the wastewater treatment plant is closer to residential areas than the recommended separation distance of 300 metres, the existing tree line must be kept in place to curtail the impact of odour from the facility.
The expansion will include the addition of a wastewater aerated pond system that would incorporate two to three new aerated cells, an ultraviolet disinfection treatment system and a sludge management system.
