Prominent baseball writer and New York Times bestselling author Jonah Keri, known in Montreal for his writing on the Montreal Expos, has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm.

According to documents filed in the case, the alleged assaults took place this week, in May 2019 and in July 2018.

Keri, 44, is also facing one charge of uttering threats. His wife is the alleged victim in each of the charges.

The St-Laurent native appeared briefly at the Montreal courthouse Friday morning, where he was released from detention after agreeing to respect several conditions. He had been detained since Thursday.

As part of his conditions, Keri is barred from going to his family residence and will reside with his mother for the time being. He is also prohibited from being within 250 metres of his wife, her residence, or her place of work.

“When couples have trouble, they sometimes land here (in court),” Keri’s lawyer, Louis Morena, said outside the courtroom.

“Threats are sometimes said in a moment of anger, especially when it’s an emotional situation,” Morena added. “Hopefully this will be resolved in a peaceful way and I think it will eventually.”

One of Keri’s employers, The Athletic, immediately issued a statement on Friday.

“The Athletic has a zero-tolerance policy for violence of any kind,” it said. “We have suspended Jonah Keri pending further information.”
