It served its purpose, and served it well, but the former Captain William Jackman Hospital in Labrador City is up for sale.
The facility was in operation from 1965 until the new Labrador West Health Centre began operating late in 2014 and was officially opened Feb. 4, 2015.
The building, which is approximately 50 years old, was initially built by the Iron Ore Company of Canada and operated by the Salvation Army.
The deadline for bids was Dec. 20, and the successful bidder will be informed on Jan. 4. A deal has to be concluded and accepted by Jan. 18.
The specifics of the building, which is close to 10,000 square meters, were in a document that was about 160 pages in length. For anyone who was interested, a full report of the state of the building and the work that has been performed there recently was available online. In the event somebody wanted the land, there was also an estimate of the cost of demolition.
It will be early in the New Year before its known if anybody was interested in the old hospital and was able to acquire the property. The potential future of the building has been the subject of much speculation in local circles.
