HOPEDALE, N.L. — Kate Mitchell, the former First Minister of the Nunatsiavut Assembly and Ordinary Member for Makkovik, resigned on Dec. 10.
Her resignation comes a week after she resigned as First Minister and Minister of Nunatsiavut Affairs, amid allegations she acted improperly in a housing matter.
“Although I am disappointed, I respect Ms. Mitchell’s decision,” said Nunatsiavut Government president Johannes Lampe in an interview. “I want to thank her for the tremendous contributions she have made to the Nunatsiavut Government, to the Constituency of Makkovik and indeed all Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”
When she resigned as minister on Dec. 3 Lampe said she interfered in matters that are the sole responsibility of Torngat Regional Housing Association.
A date has yet to be determined for a byelection in Makkovik.
