A Gander search and rescue (SAR) squadron played a big role in saving a group of fishermen from St. Pierre et Miquelon who found in trouble early Monday morning.
The Canadian Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre in St. John’s was alerted at 1:27 a.m. at the FV Lawn Bay Pride was taking on water.

personnel have returned home
Communication was lost with the men and their emergency position-indicating radio beacon station was activated.
The Royal Canadian Air Force — the 103 squadron, based in Gander, and the 413 squadron, from 14 Wing Greenwood, N.S., — successfully rescued the men, who had abandoned their vessel and were located 44 nautical miles south southeast of St Pierre et Miquelon.
According to the Halifax SAR Twitter page, techs were lowered to their life raft, hoisted them to safety and transported them to Marystown.
“Due to the immediate actions of the fishermen and SAR personnel, all are safe and SAR personnel have returned home,” the tweet indicated.
