Together: A Day on the Town
A new photography exhibit by the Association for New Canadians (ANC) is on display at St. John’s City Hall in the Wyatt Hall until Thursday, June 27. “Together: A Day on the Town” documents the first visit of ANC students to some of St. John’s most popular destinations and sites. The exhibit is available for public viewing weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A reception will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20 to celebrate the exhibit.

The St. John’s Retired Citizens Association’s bingo is held every Monday night at 10 Bennett Ave. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the games start at 8 p.m. The cost is just $5 per card. The escalating jackpot is around $1,000.

Pops Concert
St. James United Church invites everyone to their spring Pops Concert from 7-9 p.m. It’s a presentation of film music, show tunes, jazz standards and video game music composed over the past 60 years. Come enjoy an evening of varied instrumental and vocal music featuring: the St. James Jazz Trio; Scott Hewlett, guitarist; Alison Petten and Kiersten Noel, singers; and Amy Dalziel, St. James’ organist and Associate Music Director. Tranquil Tuesdays
Join the A.C. Hunter Library and our friends for meditation, mindfulness and fitness at the library. Today’s session will be gentle yoga with Loretta O’Leary of Hot Yoga Bodies. Fish Cakes & Accordions Experience
O’Brien’s Music is partnering with Rocket Bakery to offer a unique hands-on experience with the quintessential Newfoundland folk instrument: the button accordion. Come and find out all about how the instrument works and we’ll even help you try your hand at playing a tune. While you listen to traditional Newfoundland tunes played on a variety of different instruments, you’ll learn about how the button accordion came to be so popular in Newfoundland and you’ll enjoy Rocket Bakery’s take on a traditional fish cake dinner featuring two of Rocket’s special kitchen party fish cakes, salad, dessert and tea or coffee. Beer and wine available, too. Tickets ($45) available on Eventbrite. This event runs Tuesdays 6:30-8 p.m. until Sept. 24.

Refugee Week open house
The Association for New Canadians’ ESL School (148 Elizabeth Ave.) invites everyone to meet the adult ESL students and learn about their cultures of origin. Between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., enjoy conversation opportunities, cultural booths and demonstrations (coffee ceremony, dances, scarf and hijab wrapping, etc.). At 1 p.m., a short concert of music, dance, and song goes ahead in the cafeteria. Global Eats, the ANC’s social enterprise food truck, will make its first appearance with a limited sampling menu at introductory prices. Everyone is welcome. There is no admission fee.

Classics in Newfoundland: An Unexpected Presence
What do ancient Greece and Rome have to do with Newfoundland? Dr. Luke Roman from the Department of Classics at Memorial University will explore the presence of Greco-Roman antiquity in the history and cultures of Newfoundland and Labrador. This voyage through unexpected corners of the province’s history will include some interesting stops along the way: the teaching of Latin in the schools; Wilfrid Grenfell’s admiration of “the Greek perfection of body”; the appearance of Dido, Queen of Carthage, in the annals of Newfoundland lexicography; and the fierce attacks on rivals waged in print by John F. Morris, editor of The Register and professor of literature and classics at St. Bonaventure’s College. Lecture takes place in The Rooms theatre from 7-8 p.m. and is included with admission.
