OTTAWA – Trevor Miller of Grand Falls-Windsor is one of the first Canadians to receive the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award.
Public Safety Canada hosted the inaugural award ceremony in Ottawa on Thursday, May 24.
The new award recognizes exceptional service and achievement in emergency management across Canada.
The recognition program is a joint partnership between federal, provincial and territorial governments.
The awards are presented in five categories – resilient Communities, youth, search and rescue volunteers, search and rescue employees, and outstanding contribution to emergency management.
Miller, a public relations officer for Exploits Search and Rescue Team, received his award in the search and rescue volunteer category.
Miller has been a member of the team for 11 years and was instrumental in helping to raise funds to buy a new mobile command centre. He has also contributed to advancing search and rescue technology in the province through the development, implementation and training of the Emwerx command software and the ESRI digital mapping system.
“Being part of a great team doing great things allows individuals to excel at whatever they do,” Miller wrote in a post on his Facebook page acknowledging the award.
Award recipients were presented with a medallion which features an emblem created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority that was designed to be relevant across all disciplines, all levels of government, all hazards and all regions.
