Firefighters spent the morning battling what was initially thought to be a hay fire at Lester’s Farm on Brookfield Road. The farm is owned by Colin Lester.
They were called to the scene around 7:45 a.m. They headed to the site expecting a hay fire and found so much more when they arrived as the fire had burned into the rafters if the hay barn.
A barn, containing about 100 large round bales of hay had caught fire. Farm workers had already started to remove the bales from the barn when the firefighters arrived and started to douse the fire with water.
All if the bales were removed from the barn and heavy equipment spread those out over a large are adjacent to the site, they were sprayed again with water and then doused with a foam agent used to suppress any possible fire, covering the material and choking away oxygen from any remaining embers or flare ups.
Several trucks remained in the scene including a water truck being used to refill the portable reservoir erected on site. In addition, firefighters had to fill the main truck with additional foam agent to complete the task of covering the hay.
