MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates is stepping down from that organization to seek the Liberal nomination in the upcoming Topsail-Paradise byelection.
Hynes-Coates is the first person to step forward for the Liberal nomination for the byelection, which was called after the resignation of former premier Paul Davis effective November 2.
Hynes-Coates became national president of MADD Canada in 2016. She is the stepmother of Nick Coates, who was killed by a drunk driver on Kenmount Road in 2013.
Should Hynes-Coates’ bid be successful, she’ll be up against Paradise town councilor Paul Dinn, who won the Tory nomination for the byelection on Nov. 13. Dinn beat out Conception Bay South councilor Darrin Bent for the nomination.
The New Democratic Party has yet to call for nominations for candidates in the district.
The byelection is expected to take place in mid –to-late January.
