COOK'S HARBOUR, N.L. — Conservation officers have euthanized a moose found injured near Cook’s Harbour branch on the Great Northern Peninsula.

A Facebook video showed the moose struggling to stand on its hind legs Wednesday evening, Jan. 23.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources’ after-hours standby officer received a report of an injured moose on Route 430 at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning, Jan. 24.

Per the department, a conservation officer responded immediately and located the moose at 9:15 a.m.

Due to the extent of the animal’s injuries the moose was euthanized as per departmental policy.

Department officials have checked and reconfirmed that a conservation officer was on call overnight; however, no phone calls were received at the after-hours phone line.

The department says after hours or emergencies calls should be made to the department’s standby numbers, which in this area is 709-457-7243 or 709-861-7355 and not the local office.
