2016 Design and Story Contest winners announced

The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has announced the winners of its 2016 Design and Story Contest.

One overall winner was chosen and will be awarded a $100-prize. His design will also appear on this spring's official Heritage Fair T-shirt.

Six regional winners were also chosen from across the province and will receive $50 prizes.

The winners are:

Provincial Winner: Joshua Mack (Age: 14, Grade 9, Beaconsfield Junior High);

Avalon Regional Winner: Serena Phillips (Age: 10, Grade 5, Cowan Heights Elementary);

Burin Regional Winner: Jacob Ward (Age: 13, Grade 8, St. Anne’s School);

Central Regional Winner: Emily Byrne (Age: 11, Grade 6, Helen Tulk Elementary);

Labrador Regional Winner: Kelsey Jacque (Age: 14, Grade 9, B. L. Morrison All Grade School);

Straits Regional Winner: Angel Dyson (Age: 10, Grade 5, Sacred Heart All Grade);

Western Regional Winner: Chloe Smith (Age: 12, Grade 7, Our Lady of Mercy Elementary)

The Design and Story contest is held each year by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador as a warmup for the Heritage Fairs. Students from Grade 4 to 12 interpret the annual historical theme in drawings and accompanying stories.

This year's theme was "Service and Sacrifice: Shaping Our Culture," which attracted entries from 285 students.

The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is a non-profit organization with a mandate to present the province's history and heritage.
