RCMP on the Burin Peninsula seized over 700, 60-ounce bottles of contraband alcohol this week, the result of an investigation into smuggling activities between Newfoundland and the French islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. According to the press release issued Tuesday, Aug. 20, by the RCMP’s B Division media relations officer, the discovery was made in an area between the communities of Point May and Fortune.

“As a result of two separate operations, this past week we seized 725 60-ounce bottles of contraband alcohol smuggled from Saint-Pierre and Miquelon,” said Staff Sergeant Dale Foote in the release.

According to the RCMP, the liquor is being smuggled by locals who are known to police.

“Although arrests have not yet been made, the RCMP are cognizant of the areas and groups who are actively involved in smuggling and we are continuing to investigate,” Foote stated.

“Seizure of this liquor demonstrates the commitment of the RCMP to shut down this illegal activity. I thank all our police officers who were involved in these operations, as well as Fisheries and Land Resources, Fish and Wildlife Division who assisted.”

The RCMP encourage anyone with information on the illegal smuggling of alcohol to contact the Burin Peninsula RCMP at 709-279-3001 or to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (TIPS is 8477).
