Tom Beckett, a human rights activist with the group, explained that Al-Nakba is a day of remembrance of when more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were forcibly driven from their homes, farms, businesses and villages by the Israeli military during the 1948 Palestinian War. Beckett said the military was comprised mainly of Zionist paramilitary organizations such as Irgun, Haganah and Lehi in the immediate aftermath of the recognition of Israel by the United Nations. At Monday’s event, Beckett read aloud the names of Palestinian villagers displaced on Al-Nakba.
