Higgins won in the non-fiction category for her second book, “Newfoundland in the First World War” (Boulder Publications). She was up against the late elder John Nick Jeddore, author of “Moccasin Tracks: A Memoir of Mi’kmaw Life in Newfoundland” (ISER Books); and Telegram reporter James McLeod, author of “Turmoil, As Usual: Politics in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Road to the 2015 Election” (Creative Book Publishing).

Warner’s “Octopus” (Biblioasis) won him the E.J. Pratt Poetry Award. His competition was Michael Crummey, who wrote “Little Dogs: Poems Selected & New” (House of Anansi); and Robin Durnford, who wrote “Half Rock” (Gaspereau Press).

Higgins and Warner won $1,500 each, and the other finalists walked away with a $500 prize.

The awards were presented Wednesday afternoon at Government House in St. John’s at a ceremony hosted by Lt.-Gov. Frank Fagan. The awards are sponsored by the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Telegram, along with Perfect Day and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, also sponsored the awards this year.
