According to the Canadian Red Cross, close to 130 tenants of the Rockliffe Heights in St. John's displaced by a fire Thursday hope to find out today when they can return home.
A fire broke out in one of the building's ground-level apartments around 2 p.m. and while the blaze was extinguished quickly by the St. John's Regional Fire Department, confining the damage to the one apartment, smoke elsewhere in the building prompted health and safety concerns for the remainder of the residents. As such, everyone was removed for the night.
The Red Cross says of the 14 evacuees from 11 apartments that availed of its temporary reception centre, nine were able to secure their own accomodations for the night while the remaining five had hotel rooms arranged by the charitable organization.

No one was injured in the blaze, but more than 100 tenants could not return to their apartments at Rockliffe Heights on Blackmarsh Road in St. John’s Thursday night because of damage to the building’s electrical and safety systems sustained in an afternoon fire. The Red Cross was at the scene to help any tenants who needed emergency lodging.
One ground-level apartment was damaged by fire, smoke and water.
No injuries were reported to any of the residents, although the woman from the damaged unit was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
