Randy Pope, 36, of Appleton in central Newfoundland, was expected to appear in court Friday to face multiple charges following an armed standoff with the RCMP Thursday morning.
At approximately 7:20 a.m. Thursday, Gander RCMP responded to a complaint in Appleton where witnesses reported that a firearm had been pointed at a local resident.
A news release notes RCMP officers tracked the suspect to a house in the River Road area of Appleton.
Initially, the man refused to exit the residence.
People living in the immediate area were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, while others were asked to remain inside their homes and avoid the area of River Road and Roland Road in the town.
Pope was subsequently arrested and taken into custody later in the morning.
He appeared in provincial court in Gander later in the day Thursday, and was expected back in court Friday.
The charges against Pope include: three counts of assault with a weapon; three counts of pointing a firearm; two counts of mischief; a charge of using a firearm in the commission of an offence; possession of a prohibited weapon; two counts of making threats; and one count of careless use of a firearm.
The RCMP investigation into the incident is continuing.
