The Town of Conception Bay South is ready to test a new waste removal system.

The town has released a map of Phase 1 streets for the new program, which is set to begin in October, along with specific details about how the program will work. Residents falling within the test area can see on the locator map if they will receive automated waste collection this fall.

Each home or residential unit in Phase 1 will receive a garbage cart from the town in September. These carts will be electronically tagged to help manage the cart inventory, verify the correct address for misplaced carts and record the maintenance and replacement history of the carts.

“We would like to thank all residents who took the time to provide feedback on our survey,’’ C.B.S. mayor Terry French said Wednesday.

“Many of our residents believe this program is a great initiative that will help keep our town clean. Automated waste collection is a safer, smarter, and cleaner way to collect garbage,” he added.

The carts will have a capacity of 360 litres and will be able hold four to six full garbage bags.

Through this test program, garbage carts will be emptied using a mechanical arm on a garbage truck, eliminating the need for workers to lift and haul garbage.

According to representatives at the Town of C.B.S., this process is a safer, smarter and cleaner way to collect garbage.

The program will be phased in over three years.

Only residents in Phase 1 will receive automated waste collection this fall for garbage only. The program does not include recycling for now.

Prior to finalizing the program details, the town issued an automated waste collection survey to residents.

The carts will belong to the property, not the property owner. If a resident moves, they must leave their cart behind.

Residents are asked to note that garbage and recycling collection days will not change with the implementation of automated waste collection.

With the implementation of this new program, residents are now required to follow some additional guidelines.

By enacting this program, C.B.S. hopes to reduces the potential for workplace injury and reduces the Town’s occupational health and safety costs.

The program promotes recycling through a reduced bag limit per household, which results in lower landfill costs to the town (it costs three times more in fees to bring waste to the landfill than to bring recycling!).

This program will reduce litter, as well as rodent and pest problems. In addition, it will reduce waste going to the landfill, which in turn reduces the volume of greenhouse gases produced.

For further details, residents can find those by going online at www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/automated-waste. There is an indicator map on the website. Follow the instructions to see if you fall in the catchment area for Phase 1 of the program
