BAY ROBERTS, N.L.

The Town of Bay Roberts recently received its highest honour ever from the annual Communities in Bloom National and International Awards.

For 2018, the town garnered a five blooms bronze rating, with judges making specific mention of the municipality’s efforts to tap experiential tourism opportunities within green spaces.

Ron Delaney, director of tourism and economic development, attended the annual conference and awards last month with Coun. Silas Badcock.

Bay Roberts received a score of 840 out of 1,000 — its best performance yet.

The town has participated in the Communities in Bloom initiative for the past eight years. The competition encourages communities to focus on environmental responsibility and beautification. Delaney said the input from judges over the years has been very helpful when it come to the ongoing work of making Bay Roberts an attractive place.

“One of the big things they say is that every community has got to have its roads paved and potholes filled, and you’ve got to have your garbage collection and streets plowed, but it takes the other things to make your community a community — something that shows a sense of place, a reason for somebody to pick your community over the other community to set up shop in.”

Delaney gave credit to town staff and community volunteers who made the effort to give life to Bay Roberts’ public spaces.
