That’s because the American production of American Gods is filming portions of its first season in the Conception Bay North community. Film crews used the southern part of the walk near what’s known as Juggler’s Cove and Long Point. It’s adjacent to the popular Mad Rock part of the trail.

“We’re very excited,” said Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood. “Lent whatever assistance we could to them. It’s good news all around.”

Based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, American Gods centres around Shadow Moon, a former convict who travels the United States after coming under the employ of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, being played by Ian McShane (Deadwood, The Pillars of Earth). During his travels, Moon discovers old gods from ancient mythology have manifested themselves as humans. They plan to combat the “new American gods” like technology, celebrity and media.

Produced by Starz, the show also stars Gillian Anderson (X-Files), Ricky Whittle (The 100), Crispin Glover (Back To The Future) and Emily Browning (A Series Of Unfortunate Events).

American Gods is created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green.

Wood said the opportunity for Bay Roberts to host the highly anticipated show came after the Shoreline Heritage Walk was prominently featured in a number of tourism ads.

He sees the town’s inclusion as a great step for the entire region.

“It’s good,” said Wood. “One of the things we do is try and get people to come here.

That kind of thing promotes the economic base and the economic spinoffs. It’s not costing anything. Any time we can offer up our help to them, we’ll certainly do it.

“It’s great promotion for the town, Conception Bay North and all of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

American Gods will premier in 2017.
