GANDER, N.L. — Gander RCMP are reminding motorists about the mechanics of the move-over law after a woman from Boyd’s Cove passed an ambulance near Jonathan’s Pond with its emergency lights activated on April 3.
According to a RCMP news release, the incident was reported to police who then were able to find the driver.
The woman told officers she thought it was okay to pass a moving ambulance and referred them to the move-over law.
That law actually requires motorists to slow down and move over when approaching a designated vehicle that is stopped in a lane or on the edge/shoulder of a roadway, the release notes.
Upon the approach of an emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens activated, meanwhile, drivers must yield the right-of-way, immediately pulling over to the right-hand side of the curb or edge of the roadway, clear of an intersection. Motorists must stop and stay in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.
Motorists are not permitted to overtake an emergency vehicle travelling on the roadway with its lights and sirens activated under any circumstances.
The woman was ticketed for passing the ambulance, the news release indicated.
