ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — ST.JOHN’S — One of two brothers charged with a serious beating of a man on Cookstown Road in St. John's last week has agreed to stay in jail until his case is heard; the other has opted to try and get bail.

When the case of William Ryan, 48, and Anthony Ryan, 46, was called in provincial court in St. John's Monday, the older brother consented to stay in custody at least until his next court appearance next week. The younger brother asked for a bail hearing, which was set for Friday.

The Ryan brothers are both charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon — a golf club — in connection with an attack on a 47-year-old man on Cookstown Road, in the centre of the city, early Wednesday morning. Court documents indicate the brothers live together on that street.

Forensic investigators with the RNC were seen collecting pieces of a broken golf club from the pavement on the road in the early morning hours.

Police officers had reportedly been en route to a call when they noticed a disturbance in the street shortly after midnight. Paramedics treated the seriously injured man on-site before taking him to hospital in an ambulance, and police took the Ryan brothers into custody.

The victim of the alleged attack, whom police say was known to the brothers, remains in hospital in critical condition.
