A brush fire near homes on Old Pennywell Road caused a few anxious moments Thursday evening.

Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department initially had trouble accessing the blaze but did eventually find a way to get close to the approximately 50-meter by 50-meter fire through the ongoing Team Gushue Highway construction area. Smoke from the fire was seen drifting over Old Pennywell and Kenmount Roads. Firefighters deployed hoses and extinguished the flames at the leading edge of the fire closest to houses before bringing the blaze under control. Provincial forestry firefighters also arrived on scene and, with the assistance of the St. John’s Regional trucks providing water, finished putting out hotspots and soaked the ground in the area. No cause for the fire has been determined at this time.
