A brushfire about two kilometres away from Fermeuse on the Southern Shore is about 90 per cent contained as of Friday morning, according to provincial fire duty officer Boyd Pittman.
“Last report I got last night of the fire … there was no visible flame and a little bit of smoke,” Pittman said.
Three forest fire personnel and a fully equipped fire truck were on their way to the area as of Friday morning to assess the fire.
While it’s hard to quantify what impact the rain in the area has had on the fire, it’s a welcome development, Pittman said.
When fire crews, a helicopter and a water bomber from Gander began battling the fire Thursday afternoon, it was believed the fire covered about three hectares of land. But that estimate has since changed.
“It’s too early to say, but we have a rough estimate the size of 10 hectares,” Pittman said. “(But) the estimate always changes when the fire is fully out, and we can measure the area.”
