Joseph “Joe” Noel, originally from Freshwater, Conception Bay North, died Friday at Carbonear General Hospital, just around the corner from Noel Motors & Transit on Saddle Hill, a business he co-founded with his late brother Roy in 1953.
Joe Noel’s activities in Carbonear included a turkey farm, convenience store, and construction company, in addition to Noel Motors & Transit. The latter company remains contracted to transport local school children in the area.
Joe and his brother Roy started a taxi service in 1946. Roy had just returned from serving in the Second World War.
“Noel’s had one of the first 1946 Plymouths after the war,” Joe told The Compass in 2014.

“Noel’s had one of the first 1946 Plymouths after the war,” Joe told The Compass in 2014.
As more people purchased vehicles, demand for the taxi and bus service within town began to decline. With that in mind, Noel Motors & Transit opened, followed by Noel’s Convenience on an adjacent property in 1966.
“If we were going to survive, we had to diversify,” Joe said in 2014.
Those businesses employed many within Joe’s family, but his interests went well beyond the welfare of the Noel brood. He was a founding member of the Trinity-Conception-Placentia Health Foundation, Carbonear Air Cadets and the Carbonear Heritage Society. He served on the Carbonear Hospital Board and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Baccalieu Hall of Fame and the Kiwanis Club of Carbonear. He was a charter member of the latter group and served as the patron of last year’s Kiwanis Music Festival in Carbonear.

Joe was also active politically. He ran provincially as a Tory in the 1960s and served on the Carbonear town council from 1973-1981.
A funeral for Joe Noel took place Monday morning in Carbonear at Bethany United Church.
