CARBONEAR, N.L. — This winter has not been especially severe, but the Town of Carbonear hasn’t been forced to use its salt and sand supply any more or less than in years past.
During the Tuesday, Feb. 12 council meeting, director of public works Brian O’Grady said all the salt and sand purchased for the season is on site at the municipal depot.
“Our snow clearing requirements this year has actually been a little bit down compared to the previous winters,” he said. “We don’t need to tell people that we haven’t had a lot of snow. But our salt and sand consumption is pretty much on par, because we have had some cold snaps and wet, then cold and freezing. But the stockpile we have is healthy and we don’t anticipate any problems with our quantity of sand we have in stock for this winter season. We actually anticipate to have a little bit left over, which we’ll carry forward for next year.”
O’Grady said winter snow clearing shifts will remain in place until the end of March. At Tuesday’s meeting, council also agreed to issue a tender for a new electric sander attachment to be installed on the rear of a pickup truck. Coun. Vic Jenkins, chair of the public works, waste management and community service committee, said the attachment the town had was 11 years old and had outlived its usefulness. Council agreed to purchase a new sander at a price not to exceed $10,000.
