Six communities in southern Labrador are getting LTE broadband wireless technology.
Premier Dwight Ball made the announcement at the Selma Barkham Town Centre in Red Bay today, Wednesday, Nov. 28.
The cost of the over $1-million project is being shared between Bell Canada, the provincial government, Nunacor Development Corporation, and the NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC).
As a result, Red Bay, Mary’s Harbour, St. Lewis, Port Hope Simpson, Charlottetown and Cartwright will see LTE deployed at 700 MHz, according to a release from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation.
It will allow for greater reach in rural areas and increased in-building coverage.
“Today, more than ever, support for innovation and technology is key to diversifying economies,” Ball said in the release.
Bell is contributing $587,000, while the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is kicking in $256,000. The NCC’s share towards the initiative is $114,000. The Nunacor Development Corporation’s contribution is $68,000.
“This is another in a series of significant investments by Bell in telecommunications infrastructure in Labrador that have been enabled by the leadership and partnership of community organizations like Nunacor Development Corporation and the NunatuKavut Community Council,” said Glen LeBlanc, Bell Canada’s vice-chair for the Atlantic region.
