Police in Central Newfoundland seized a massive quantity of contraband tobacco earlier this week.
RCMP NL Federal Serious & Organized Crime - Gander initiated an investigation two weeks ago into suspected possession of contraband tobacco, contrary to the Provincial Revenue Administration Act, as well as the Federal Excise Act, 2001.
Tuesday, Aug. 13, three individuals were arrested in Grand Falls-Windsor. The search of two transport trucks and a passenger van resulted in the seizure of 3,000 cartons of contraband tobacco, along with a quantity of Canadian currency.
According to a police news release, one carton of contraband tobacco can sell for $40-$50 on the street, putting the street value of the tobacco seized in the range of $120,000 to $150,000.
The three individuals have been released and the investigation is continuing. Charges are anticipated.
