City of Corner Brook awards contract to build trail in honour of Maj. Bertram Butler

Cangro Services Limited has been awarded the contract to finally build the Maj. Bertram Butler Trail in Corner Brook.
The project, which honours the First World War veteran who was the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s most decorated soldier, was first announced in 2016.
Work on the trail was delayed by the construction of a new boutique hotel and microbrewery on West Street near where the trailhead is to be located at the base of Three Bear Mountain.
Now that the work has advanced far along enough, the city has proceeded with a tender to build the trail. Cangro won the job with its bid of $142,870.
It was actually not the lowest of the six bids submitted. However, according to City of Corner Brook staff, the two lowest bids had to be disqualified because their schedule of quantities had been completed incorrectly.
No timeline has been set for trail construction to commence, though the contract awarded specifies the work should only require 10 working days to complete
Maj. Butler, who was at the infamous Battle of Beaumont Hamel in 1916, was originally from eastern Newfoundland. He moved to Corner Brook shortly after the war and lived in the city until his death in 1970.
