The city installed camera equipment at the crosswalk adjacent to Holy Heart of Mary High School Tuesday after a student was recently struck trying to cross there.

Coun. Debbie Hanlon said the city is studying the crosswalk and will collect several days’ worth of data using CCTV cameras to learn more about the area.

Once enough data is collected, recommendations will be made to improve pedestrian safety at the crosswalk, she said.

“We’re doing the counts, then we’ll bring it forward – bring it back to council – and try to do something immediately.”

Hanlon said she receives a lot of complaints about crosswalks in the city in general, but people expressed specific concerns about the crosswalk near Holy Heart, particularly speeding.

“It’s a lot of traffic going back and forth there at a congested time, so at one particular time in the morning, or lunchtime, there’s masses of crowds of people coming and going there, so people need to slow down,” she said.

“Most of the crosswalks are a problem because people just don’t slow down.”

Hanlon said there are many possibilities of what could be implemented to improve safety at the crosswalk, including speed bumps or reconfiguration of the road, but those details will be figured out once enough information is gathered.
