A Clarke’s Beach dog breeder has been given a suspended sentence and prohibited from owning animals for five years after pleading guilty to animal cruelty earlier this week.
Officially, Carl Caravan was convicted under the Criminal Code of unlawfully causing an animal unnecessary suffering.
The conviction stems from an investigation by Bay Roberts RCMP that started in the spring of 2019 with the execution of a search warrant a report of animal cruelty.
As a result, five dogs — including one that was pregnant — were seized from Caravan’s home and the animals were placed in foster care through the Baccalieu Trail SPCA.
At the time, the RCMP said the dogs were malnourished.
New homes were eventually found for the dogs.
