A fire at the College of the North Atlantic campus in St. John’s caused extensive damage to a second-floor classroom Friday night.

Platoon chief Rick Dehann of the St. John’s Regional fire department told the Telegram the fire was reported by a staff member on site and that when they arrived on scene, flames up to the classroom ceiling could be seen through an outside window.

Firefighters gained access to the inside of the building and also used a ladder to access the outside of the classroom by breaking in through the window.

They attacked the fire from both sides and had the blaze out within minutes but not before the damage was done.

No information was available as to what may have caused the fire and the incident is under investigation.
