A quiet Wednesday night drive and coffee run took a turn for the worse when an older couple inadvertently drove their car onto a layer of ice over a flooded dirt road in Portugal Cove.

The car crashed through the ice and sank in the roughly half-metre of water, stranding them in the vehicle. Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s firefighters arriving on scene had initially been prepared for a more serious water rescue in Windsor Lake but quickly found the car sitting in the shallow water about fifty metres west. The couple were drinking their coffees inside and waiting for a tow-truck.

Neither the man or woman was injured and neither wanted to get out of the car.

Emergency officials waited on scene until the tow-truck arrived to rescue the couple, and their car, from the predicament.
